Aircraft Service Company Uses Technology to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 25%

Houston, TX – Greenhouse gas emissions by trucks servicing aircraft at one of the nation’s busiest airports have been reduced by 25%, according to a recent field trial.

The emission cuts are the result of new scheduling and dispatching technology used by an aviation water and lavatory service company that handles a majority of the jets at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The FleetChief™ Cloud ramp service optimization system, developed by Empower Decision Systems, Inc., and deployed to perform lavatory services on the airfield for over six months, combines real-time flight schedule and gate assignment information with sophisticated scheduling algorithms to assign trucks closest to each arriving aircraft. Work instructions are communicated wirelessly and GPS reports track the progress of the workers to streamline operations.

The result is a 35% reduction in the number of vehicles required to service daily flights and a 25% reduction in the amount of fuel burned by the service fleet.

According to Doug Stephan, Director – Solutions Development for Empower Decision Systems, the overall emissions reductions are substantial even though the remaining trucks spend less time idling and more time driving.

“We’ve been pleasantly surprised with the results of the field trial and the magnitude of cost savings,” said Mr. Stephan. “Typically, we see a reduction of around 30% in operating costs and a proportionate reduction in fuel burn, so this is better than anticipated. We are looking forward to helping other airport service providers enjoy similar fuel burn and fleet cost reductions.”

Buoyed by the results, the aviation water and lavatory service company now plans to implement the technology at the Liberty International Airport in Newark, N.J., as soon as the system is fully deployed in Houston, Stephan said.
